Monstress #2 by Marjorie Liu, Sana Takeda

3.5

I wanted a wolf tail.
I wanted wolf claws and wolf teeth.
“Little wolf, you have all those things. But they are safe within you, where no one can take them.”

We’re off to the high seas to seek an answer on an island shrouded by mists and screaming where few return alive. Maika’s mother was one.
As they traverse the watery depths, political machinations are brought to light where Maika’s enemies grow - those who want to use her, kill her, or trap her.
We also learn more of her history and of her history as well as the backstory of the monster within the mask.

The way Liu mirrors Maika’s twisted, one-sided relationship with her mother (constantly seeking approval, not wanting to be left behind) with sweet Little Fox Kippa’s attachment is genius. And heartbreaking.

I want more on Captain Ren - a necromancer cat who looks out for Kippa and is quick to raise his claws and snarl a catty retort!

I think this instalment was more focused on the world and the history rather the present and the characters.
