Midnight in Death by J.D. Robb
2.0

While impressed with Roberts' ability to condense an In Death book into about 90 pages, I can't help but be disappointed.

I've been reading a lot novellas and #.5 books in different series the past few days (in my rush to get as many books in before the new year) and I have discovered a new found love for them. These are books I typically skip in my rush to get on with the next book in the series, but they often provide a bit of insight into the characters in-between the books. Whether it's a silly scene between with MCs or a main focus on side character, they usually offer something a main series book doesn't; even if it's not as good.

This, however, was just a shortened version of a full length novel, which wasn't as good and didn't add anything to the series. She could have just expanded it and published it as a new book in the series. I'm not sure what Roberts' reason was for writing this - perhaps it was for a serial publication or just for fun, but I kept hoping it would be something else.

I would have liked an In Death .5/novella to be a frivolous scene between Roake an Eve around the Christmas tree, a murder/mystery with Peabody and McNab as the MCs, a prequel - Eve's first case, Roarke's childhood, etc, etc.

It was a good book for what it was, I'm just disappointed because I hoped for something that wasn't there. There's a lot of ways an author can utilize an in-between book or novella and this just wasn't what I wanted to read. It looks like there are a few more In Death novellas and I hope they will add a little more to what happens between books, but I have a feeling they wont.
