Iron Night by M.L. Brennan

Reading the sequel to a fantastic new book is always a worry, was it a one-hit wonder, will this be a repeat of the first book but weaker, has the author got any other ideas? Well I am pleased to say that this was a worthy successor, it didn't lose what made the first one fresh and different but it had a new story to tell.

Fort(itude) Scott is the youngest vampire in the Scott family. He is the only one ho hasn't fully transitioned but after his host mother committed suicide in the previous book he is beginning to start transition - something that will only complete when his host father is also dead.

He is now a waiter in a snooty restaurant and still driving the beaten up old Fiesta. However, as he has now entered transition he is slowly being initiated into the family business which is similar to a supernatural Mafia - the Scotts are the ruling family and all other supernaturals pay tithes and swear allegiance to them, specifically Fort's mother Madeleine.

When Fort finds his new flatmate murdered in suspicious circumstances he and Suzume, his kitsune friend, investigate even though his family have framed a pair of criminals and conveniently had them killed off. The investigation leads Fort to get involved with more of the supernatural community including the Neighbours and the Ad-hene (both alternate names for the fae).

One of the things I like about this series is that Fort is such a beta hero. He has a minimum pay job, a beaten up old car, a grotty apartment and gets beaten up regularly. Although he has been working out since his transition began he is still much weaker than most other supernaturals. I also enjoy Suke's pranks as much as Fort does.

Recommended for people who are bored of uber-sexy brooding, centuries-old, billionaire vampires and root for the underdog.
