A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
4.0
I was invested in the story, but less invested in the characters. There were elements/traits of each character that I enjoyed, but they read more like symbols than individuals.
That gave me enough emotional distance that when darker themes prevailed in the last third of the book I was very interested in finding out what happened, but not hung up on any one character's fate.
This might sound like a critique, but it was actually enjoyable, because I tend to be a very emotional reader and it's nice to have a little distance and just enjoy the story.
