I absolutely love this graphic novel. It is everything I hoped for and more! I love the art style and seeing Alanna and her friends, allies, and foes come to life on the page was so fun. I hope we get the whole series and more Tamora Pierce books in graphic novel format!
Moderate: Alcoholism, Bullying, Child death, Sexism, Violence, Blood, Grief, Alcohol, Colonisation, Injury/Injury detail, Pandemic/Epidemic
Minor: Racism, Xenophobia, Vomit, War
Most of the things I would list as minor in a traditional book; however, due to the nature of a graphic novel that literally shows images of things, I bumped some of them up to moderate. I do think the things I listed for content warnings were handled quite well and in ways that would be appropriate for a child. This book is so nostalgic for those of us older readers who grew up with Ms. Pierce’s books, but it would definitely be great for kids too!
