I think this story would stand on its own even without the romance, with a platonic relationship instead, which is actually incredibly satisfying for a romcom. Also, the research on stereotype threat is such an interesting (and real) scientific underpinning for the entire course of character development. I really enjoyed that. Lastly, shout-out to the US's broken healthcare system, which low-key motivates the entire plot and course of character development.
