Fleishman Is in Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner
5.0
I finally got around to reading this after the emotional recovery I needed after watching the TV show as a somewhat-recently married man who was weeks away from turning 34, and let me tell you, reading the book as a new father on the cusp of 35 had about the same effect. And for as breathtaking as the book is, the TV adaptation is a masterpiece, for which Lizzy Caplan deserves every award and the invention of new ones just to give to her.
This story, in both formats, hit me like a ton of bricks. No blurb ever does it justice. The "Toby uses dating apps" aspect is important, but it's simply a device to Trojan Horse the story of a marriage and divorce, and through that two stories of how the world punishes women for every choice they make. It raises familiar fears about getting older and missing the person you were in your youth, even if that person may not actually be worth mourning. And I think more than anything, it captures the idea that we all think we're the hero of the story, and sometimes paint those we love most as the villains, but in the end we're all a little of both.
I read this book in pieces on Kindle (Boo Amazon), mostly because of how dense and beautiful the writing is, but once I hit Part 3, I stayed up half the night to finish.
Or, for those in the know, slowly, then all at once.
