Brawl of the Wild by Dav Pilkey

4.0

Ever since #3, I've felt like Petey's character development always gets undone at the start of the next book. I was really pleased to see that not only was he grappling with keeping up the good behavior in this book, he did not let his darker impulses win (aside from yelling at Big Jim, which, okay, he could have handled that better, but Big Jim hugged him without asking and that's not okay either). Very excited for For Whom the Ball Rolls!

Reread: Wow, I was surprisingly disappointed when rereading! I still love that Petey's character development isn't undone at the end, and that being good is a process that you don't always get right, and that you have to make up for your misdeeds even if you've changed, but... I don't know. It's weaker than Lord of the Fleas, and it doesn't really call back to Call of the Wild that much so I'm going to have a harder time than I wanted with my book club.

2nd Reread: I'm finally finishing the analysis of this book for my book club, and I remember why I was so impressed the first time I read it. Dog Man refusing to leave the other dogs hit me right in the feels this time.
