WOW! What a book!!!!! I loved this book, I loved discovering the new lands, people, culture and creatures, I loved getting to know Chaol and Nesryn on a deeper level and I loved seeing Yrene again and finding out what she’s been up to since her appearance in The Assassin’s Blade.

The new characters were so interesting and unique and I really enjoyed getting to know them and understand their motivations. The ruks were also great creatures and I loved seeing their connection with the riders, though I know any of their deaths will devastate me in the next book.

Sarah really delivered with the big reveals again in this book - to the point that at the chapter 48 reveal my jaw LITERALLY dropped and I yelled OH MY GOD out loud! I did NOT see that twist coming!!! There were lots of other shocking moments, especially when we found out who the Valg had possessed, and more about Yrene’s special powers too - lots of surprises and info dumps to get us ready for the Kingdom of Ash!

I found this story really powerful too - I felt it really touched on personal healing and forgiveness, with a mental health spin on how grief, fear, guilt and shame can contribute to trauma and physical manifestations. I appreciated the way Chaol spoke about his chair, and how it wasn’t a prison and how he didn’t need handling as such. I thought Sarah did a good job with Yrene showing how to respect the person and the chair, whilst also showing how some of the other characters’ lack of consideration affected Chaol.

An emotional read that I really enjoyed and has left me SO excited to start the next one!
