The Replacement
by Brenna Yovanoff
This has been sitting on my shelf for roughly 11 years and I'm glad I finally got a chance to read it (yay for Jolabokaflod).
This is an excellent story from the perspective of a changeling in a small town. The world, its magic, and its history are fantastically constructed. The relationships are amazing, especially the friendships. It's so nice to have a "not quite normal" character who isn't a loner or complete outsider. He has friends, and his best friend is really well written (he's a ride-or-die kind of best friend).
It's engaging from the get-go and the final wrap up is very satisfying.
