The Staircase in the Woods by Chuck Wendig
5.0

"We're all really fucked up and just trying to get through life, and it's better when we do it together instead of alone. That's how we'll survive this house. That's how we'll get out of this place. Together, and not alone."

I have loved The Book of Accidents and Black River Orchard, but I admit, I was on the fence about this one until about I hit about halfway through. However, once I got there... oh man.

A group of friends go camping the summer before school starts and encounter a mysterious staircase in the woods, and when one of their friends decides to climb it -- he disappears. Now adults, the remaining friends reunite after decades apart to find their missing comrade when one of them discovers a new staircase in the woods. It's half haunted house and half psychological horror (with echos of game theory, I think any horror ARG fans will particularly like this book); a story about how friendships evolve and change and how we must all, eventually, confront our the trauma that we carry. It's rare that I find any horror where I am rooting for all the characters to make it out, but this was one of them.

TW for an implied CSA scene in the latter half of the book. It's short but it's definitely a rough one to get through.
