The Copper Promise
by Jen Williams
Almost but not quite 3 stars. Might have worked better as a TV show than as a book. There were some interesting parts, but things felt just a bit too RPG-ish: first, whenever I hear the words 'professional adventurer(s)' my realism-craving heart sinks, because adventuring is so unfeasible as a profession that pretty much the only professional adventurers in history were stinking-rich eccentric Victorians, which involved a lot less sword-fighting. Second and perhaps more importantly, it felt like everything was completely rigged to advance a certain storyline--walking into an unusual situation? Don't worry, you're sure to run into some stranger who's going to start chattering to you at length for no reason and conveniently tell you everything you need to know...or someone who has some unusual skill that they'll conveniently apply to your benefit just for kicks, *just* in time for your purposes. Finally, when the major story arc is over and it's time for certain people to get back to, I don't know, maybe some *responsibilities* that will secure and cement whatever progress they've made..."yay, what adventures will we have next?!?"
Might be good if you're looking for a simple character-romp, but not quite enough meat to this story for my taste. Close enough that I look forward to this author's skills developing over time, but not quite there yet.
