Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya
5.0

I haven’t read a story that moved me as much as this in a long time.

On the surface this is a coming of age story set in the rural Southwest in the mid-20th century. It follows the friendship of Antonio, a young boy, and Ultima, an elder and wise woman. The prose was like music, lovely and vivid. I felt each time I sat to read that I was in the beautiful green llano of New Mexico living with Antonio’s family.

You will find some familiar coming of age themes, like a struggle between good and evil, but this story feels deeper to me. It’s power is underrated but I understand now why Anaya is considered one of the forefathers off Chicanx literature.
