Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green

emotional hopeful informative reflective medium-paced

5.0

I listened to this book as an audiobook, and John narrating his own book put even more heart into his words. His marathon is professional, but hearing the emotion behind his feelings and stories was an excellent addition to the book.

I particularly appreciated, being a PT, his discussion of health disparities, access to care, and the number of factors that have influenced tuberculosis and made it the deadliest disease in human history. The juxtaposition of this book flowed smoothly, of Green's personal stories and his educational but nuanced look at tuberculosis and how much this disease has shaped society, culture, medicine, government, fashion, and more. I learned a lot and had a few moments where the certain facts and descriptions brought me to tears and others made me laugh out loud or say "wait, that was because of tuberculosis?"

John's brother Hank may be the one better-known for his science communication, but John challenges all audiences with an approachable and articulate exploration of TB that is very accessible to anyone looking to glean more information on it and the world as a whole.
