I really enjoyed this book, because it wasn't just a story about the Ivory Vikings, it included a history of Nordic peoples and the sea travelers, the various settlements established by the Nordic peoples and how they interacted with each other. It is also a story of the Catholic church at a time of expansion and change (i.e. there was a time when priests were not required to be celibate). And it also includes a brief history of chess, where the game originated and how it changed as it traveled. It is a history of the Lewis Chess pieces, and of the controversy over who might have carved them, but it is so much more than that. It includes research into sources that are only available in Icelandic, and so may not have been read by the non-Icelandic speaking world. I really found this book fascinating. I recommend this book for people interested in chess, interested in Vikings, or just interested in chess in general.
