A Door in the Dark is the type of fantasy mystery book I have been waiting for. It was intriguing and just when you thought you knew where it was going and everything was figured out, the twist comes and punches you in the face.
The characters are well rounded and you grow to love them, even when you're lead to believe that they are unlovable.
The hard magic system based in absolute rules is a key feature in ADITD and without it, the entire story would fall flat. One could even say that the magic system is a character in and of itself.
