I really enjoyed the plot and setting of this book. The author is a great storyteller! I will definitely be reading the sequel as well.
I do want to warn potential readers that some of the subject matter was darker than I expected from reading the dust jacket summary (infants and small children being brutally murdered - this event is mentioned frequently throughout the book ). There were also some really beautiful moments in the book too though, and I found myself genuinely curious about the mysteries of Weep.
I have two criticisms: one is that the book’s pacing dragged a bit at some points. There were times when I knew from foreshadowing that a big event was coming, but I had to slog through several chapters of characters’ conversations or daily life stuff before anything actually happened. My other criticism is that I felt Sarai was a more fully fleshed out character than Lazlo; I liked him, but I had trouble understanding his emotions and motives. He was just sort of a generic “good person.”
Overall, though, this was a good story and worth a read if you like fantasy and mythology!
