Mansfield Park
by Jane Austen
UPDATE 7/16/24 (a little over 12 years later)
Ahhhhhh cousins to lovers. Truly an under-represented trope.
Jkjkjkjk. I’m not counting this as a re-read because I listened to an abridged dramatization of this, but after revisiting this story I simply had to come back to this old entry so that I could rage a little bit.
Everyone in this story makes me angry. At Edmund for being an absolute stick in the mud, the Bertrams for being vain and selfish and only kind when it’s convenient to them, at the Crawfords for being too self-centered to actually be happy, at Fanny Price for never standing up for herself, and Jane Austen most of all. May she rest in peace.
Was this her first book? It’s the longest of them all, and the most undeserving of such a superlative. There is so much of this story that is unnecessary to the plot. So much waxing and waning on the most tedious of subjects, and so much glaaaazing over the most important plot points. And the play! Do NOT get me started on the dumbest plot point ever that is the play!!
And the fact that we are given so much of Henry’s attempts to win over Fanny, and so LITTLE of Edmund’s change of heart toward her is insane. My sister had me rooting for Henry and then BAMBOOZLED me! He was supposed to be changing! His true love was supposed to make him into a good man! YOU LED ME ASTRAY JANE.
