I really need to stop doubting Abby Jimenez when her books don't immediately hook me in the first chapter. They always end up being bangers! Her books are always humorous and don't skimp on the snark, and yet they are always sensitive and thoughtful without missing a beat. I related to Alexis and Daniel the least from her other leading casts, but they still stood out as complicated and well rounded characters who bring out the best of each other. They are soulmates to a T.
Abby Jimenez also writes complicated parent/child relationships so well. It speaks to this girl who has her own complicated parental relationship. I think this was where the book stood out to me, with Alexis watching her parents' dynamic with each other. The way she is determined to break the cycle of emotional abuse and gaslighting is inspiring to me.
If I had just one wish with this book, I would wish for more scenes of Daniel performing some Wakan-esque mayorly duties. But he's already so good-of-heart I probably would've passed away if we were given more.
