The Storm Runner by J.C. Cervantes

2.0

I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Zane lives with his mother, uncle and several family-like neighbors near a dormant volcano. Zane can only count on his family and loyal dog Rosie because everyone at school bullies him because he walks with a cane. Little does Zane know, but he is destined for greater things. Zane finds himself involved in a world-ending prophecy, when two terrible looking monsters show up at his volcano. Zane, the new girl from school, Brooks, and Zane’s family will need to come together to find the friendly Mayan Gods, Goddesses, and creatures to keep Zane alive and save the world.

This book was difficult to get into, it was slow moving. While it does read like a Percy Jackson book, it will not work as well for reluctant readers. I liked that it incorporated Mayan mythology, I just wish the story surrounding it was more interesting.
