Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell
4.0

“Like Lincoln, I would like to believe the ballot is stronger than the bullet. Then again, he said that before he got shot.”

Who doesn't want to learn more about the assassinations of Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley? With a little Sondheim sprinkled in? I also learned things about Oneida, Ltd. I didn't know I needed to know.

I really enjoyed the anecdotes in this book, and feel like Sarah Vowell and I could totally be friends, running off on assassination vacations together. I did feel like the narrative got lost every once in awhile, and for me, the flow was sometimes off. But all in all, I really enjoyed this book - beware of the fairly aged references, considering it was actually published in 2005. Although that's the thing about America, its politics is always a little gross, no matter who is in the White House or what is happening in the world. I was going to say it's not as macabre as I expected, but my level of tolerance there is probably different than most people.

“If there is a recurring theme in Garfield’s diaries it’s this: I’d rather be reading.” Same, Mr. President, same.
