I did struggle to rate it, I think 3.5 would be more accurate. I couldn't really get into this story. Pug, although there is nothing wrong with him, just didn't appeal to me as the main character, I couldn't bring myself to care about him. I enjoyed much more reading about Arutha and Tomas, and that's why the second part of the book was much easier for me. The references to Lord of the rings are shocking at times, again especially at the beginning, but it gets better with time. I don't think there is anything particularly wrong with this story, I guess I just read too much fantasy to fully appreciate it, the book has its years and some tropes were bitten to the death already. I probably will give a go to the second part (when I dig that low on my tbr list that is).
