Son of Elsewhere: A Memoir in Pieces by Elamin Abdelmahmoud

Finally! A book of essays about Highway 401 that rivals the beauty of Rascal Flatts’ LIFE IS A HIGHWAY (2006). 🙂 This book arrived during a wild time in my life. I read 50% in May as I eagerly awaited the birth of my son, and now! Rory is already three months old!
“Take the early exit. Give yourself this one luxury. Sometimes we miss the good things we deserve because we think they’ll magically be given to us later.” 🥺♥️
This is a collection of honest and generous essay writing. No one has ever before convinced me to find beauty in London, Ontario or in Nu Metal. But Elamin has a gift! And he manages to switch between hyperlocal, national, and global perspectives with ease, often in the same essay! It’s good, folks.
My personal favourite part: I was endlessly endeared by Elamin’s childhood experiences on WWE.com chatrooms. What a slice of life. 10/10 🧑🍳👌
