Midnight Ruin by Katee Robert

3.0

I have been enjoying this series for a while now and I do like the twist on the Greek pantheon and the legends behind the different gods and goddesses of Olympus. It's unique and brings a certain newness to an ancient tale. Unfortunately though, I can only give this book 3 stars. I've noticed in the last couple of books Katee has been using neo-pronouns, like "xe, xir, xer", more prominently and I've had to go back and reread entire passages because of them. At one point I thought the characters were talking about a third character that came into the scene, but no, it was just character A describing character B with those pronouns. I'm all for inclusion, but when it's to the point that it's starting to alienate other readers, it may be time to pump the brakes.

Another reason why I'm only giving this book 3 stars is because of the overall grammar itself. I had noticed several instances where there were words omitted, or even doubled up, and this caused me mild irritation. A good book to me is one where the language and prose are flowing cohesively with one another and it's smooth reading. Yet when there is a grammatical error present, it's like hitting a stick on the sidewalk while riding your bike. Not enough to throw you off completely, but enough to interrupt the smooth ride. I suggest the editing team to go over the text a bit more carefully in the future so as to keep the story flowing freely.
