Mary Jane by Jessica Anya Blau

This was so good! I didn't think I would enjoy this as much as I did. It gripped me from the start. I read it in two days. Devoured it. 14 year old mary Jane in 1975 is a sheltered child by her strict mother. Her mother teaches her to cook, be a good housewife, goes to church and sings in the choir. A local doctor asks her to nanny for their daughter one summer. The inside of this house is completely different than anything Mary Jane had seen before. It was clutter on every surface, no one cooked, and they lived day to day like 1975 hippies. Mary Jane had to lie to her mom so she could stay working at this job. She fell in love with everyone in the house and opened her eyes to what she wants in life and what kind of person she wants to be. A story about mothers, daughters, race in the 70's, sex, drugs and rock n roll. It was wholesome and engaging. I loved every character in this book. (maybe not Mary Janes parents). Great book!
