I didn't like Russian literature before I started reading this. I still don't like Russian literature. This collection of short stories embodies the height of socialist realism as each one is a parable on how to be a good worker on behalf of the state. Rather than peer into the souls of the characters, the reader peers into the soul of what the Soviet leaders wanted writers to write.
