A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin

5.0

This was and probably always will be the best of them so far (A Feast for Crows is maybe my favorite but we'll get to that). The 'religions' or cults of Westeros really take center stage here with revivals and reanimations aplenty. The Civil War keeps getting bloodier and bloodier and the bodies keep stacking up. Dany's chapters really frustrated me in the end because she just chooses to stay where she's at and kind of halt her plan. I get why but I still wanted to see her take those Dragons to KL and burn Joffrey out of there.

However, I think the reason this book loses to AFfC is because of thebmother-fucking Red Wedding. When I first read that Rob was murdered I was in tears and I'll never forget the imagery of Catelyn tearing at her own face in grief. It was unbearable. I had a similar experience when watching the show, even when I knew it was coming. I was stunned silent. There really is a difference in imagining what an author puts into your head and watching it unfold in real time. It was such a success in my mind on that alone. However, I will never forgive HBO for not using Lady Stoneheart. What a boss bitch. I know they gave some of her parts to The Black Fish and Arya BUT STILL.
