Gearbreakers
by Zoe Hana Mikuta
This was a solid 3.5 stars that I'm rounding up to 4.
I have been looking for a book gives me similar feelings to the Host ever since I read that damn book years ago. FOR YEARS. Finally, I get so, so close with Gearbreakers. I really enjoyed this far much more than I was expecting. Up until probably the first third, I was interested but not invested at all. But it picked up! I liked that the Sona wasn't self pitiful or self sacrificial, a trope far overdone in the castaway turned hero genre. I liked the slow development of Sona's and Eris's romance. I had issues with the pacing, lack of world building, and I think the characters were a bit 2 dimensional, but it is YA.
