“Some people like to say that all is fair in love and war. Those people cannot be trusted with power.”

“He turned my mind towards the issue of forever. Of trust, of togetherness. No-one had made me think about things like that before.”

This was a really cute romance. Overall, it was a really enjoyable read. It covered a few serious topic (see trigger warnings at below) while also managing to keep the romance really cute. It's a royalty romance so there was that added drama and escapism, as well. I really enjoyed how the two love interests came full circle by the end. I feel like we really got a lot of closure out of their story. The spice was pretty good as well. However, what I love most about Talia Hibbert novels is the representation. The FMC is fat and Jamaican. Neither are belabored points, just simply an aspect of her identity. The FMC's sister also has a chronic illness. Again, the point is not belabored. There is conversation about how she struggles to afford healthcare at her American university but she's not used as inspiration porn. I love Hibbert's commitment to portraying realistic, diverse characters on page.

One of the main things I wasn't a fan of was that the spice wasn't really my type of spice. Sometimes praise and control kinks but, in this situation, something felt just a little off. I think it might be the racial dynamic (white man, black woman). If the roles had been reversed, maybe it wouldn't have felt so weird? However, it also could have been the narrator. He wasn't my favorite. Especially when he tried for Ruben's Scandinavian accent. The only other thing I didn't like was how fast the whole plot seemed to take place. I think it was over the course of like a month. It just felt so fast!

Overall, I really enjoyed my time with these characters. I read the whole thing in one day so it couldn't have been bad. 😂 I definitely want to read more of Hibbert's earlier work.

Trigger Warning: domestic abuse, child abuse.  Domestic abuse is talked about. Child abuse is described on page.
