She Who Became the Sun
by Shelley Parker-Chan
This book was solidly good. This is NOT a soft tale full of love and hope- this is an adult (NOT YA) novel containing a cast of interesting antiheroes who are ruthless and bloodthirsty, but have elements of reality we can all relate to (need to survive, overwhelming loneliness, self doubt and discovery, etc).
It’s very well written and very clever- the author weaves a tale that’s mostly adventure in nature, not wavering from its description as a true historical fantasy (emphasis on historical). This is not a fluffy retelling like Song of Achilles, and it’s more meat-and-potatoes and less personable than Clytemnestra. SWBTS is a serious story, dedicated to telling its tale.
Though I could’ve done with a little more in depth personality/inner monologue from our main character, I enjoyed it and look forward to reading the second in the series. Super cool to read such an adult book with a queer identifying, gender-bending MC. I was worried all the queer books were YA! :)
