The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories
by Ernest Hemingway
Mixed bag…the best stuff is really some of the best ever written. A Clean, Well-Lighted Place. Our nada, etc. Perfect story. But others can be a slog, especially the war ones, I hate to say. Even within a good story, it can be a slog to reach the good stuff—e.g.: The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Brief Happy Life of Francis Macomber. The “almost stupid genius” (Lockwood) of Hemingway so often does not have space to breathe in the endless explanations of wars and games. Still, the quality of his prose is undeniable on a sentence level, particularly his world-class dialogue.
