Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas by Adam Kay

4.0

I loved “This is Going to Hurt,” so I picked up “Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas without a second thought. Kay introduces the book by stating, “In my first book, ‘This is Going to Hurt,’ the most common reasons for entries being omitted included ‘too disgusting’ or ‘too Christmassy.’ Here I make amends for both.” So, the reader is not surprised that these excerpts are entries that didn’t quite make the cut for ‘This is Going to Hurt.’ Adam Kay’s writing is in the vein of David Sedaris - self-deprecating and satirical. Though some anecdotes were laugh out loud funny, others were empathetic, and all were entertaining. It’s a quick read - I read it in an evening - and just right for the Christmas season.

I would recommend reading ‘This is Going to Hurt’ first to get to know Kay and his style and background. This book may feel a bit “cobbled together” otherwise.
