Gaza in Crisis: Reflections on Israel's War Against the Palestinians by Noam Chomsky

challenging informative slow-paced

3.25

definitely an informative read, dense but still interesting. however i find that chomsky comes off overly-intellectual in the worst way; despite all his strong words for the destitution that the US and israel subjects the palestinian people to, his conclusions and (lack of) prescriptions are laughably toothless. i was hesitant to read a self-identifying israeli’s take on gaza and yet pappé exhibited far more sensible solidarity than his american counterpart, which is really embarrassing for somebody who’s supposed to be a leading academic on the occupation of palestine. very valuable historical insights, albeit lacking analysis of the dynamics of capital (especially as they relate to US-israeli collaboration) and especially the role of race in the zionist colonial project and the occupation’s perpetuation.

nevertheless, there’s a lot of strong contextualisation and food for thought; important parallels to the ongoing genocide in gaza are evident. although i wouldn’t recommend this anyone without a solid baseline knowledge of the occupation, it’s definitely a compelling read.
