The Apothecary Diaries, Volume 1 by Itsuki Nanao, Natsu Hyuuga

4.0

Very cute, if a little unsure what direction it will take. There's the historical and political dramas at play with court dynamics, medical mysteries, and a very handsome, very interested (though for the wrong reasons [and not the stereotypical wrong ones]), royal interloper who lives to irk MaoMao.

Maomao is smart and funny, and while she knows she's a pawn/peon for other people in the court, doesn't seem too upset with that to try and outwit herself from their games. Her calling is medicine, and so long as she is able to work with herbs and test remedies, she's pretty happy in life -- a nice change of pace that mellows out what could have turned into melodrama and instead lends a comedic lightness to the tone of the story.

Eagerly looking to read more and see where the story goes, as there's enough to tease deeper backstory I hope to explore with the other characters.
