Steve L. McEvil, Volume 1 by Lucas Turnbloom

adventurous funny hopeful lighthearted fast-paced

4.5

This graphic novel was really fun & entertaining and my 8 year old can’t wait to read it again! I loved the plot, the characters, and the color illustrations. I especially loved that the author put himself in the story. We are both excited to see what happens in the next book!

Quotes:
“I mean, it’s kind of hard taking over the world when you still have a bedtime.”

I think this sums up the story within the first few pages. Wanting to be a supervillain, but still being a kid can be a difficult process. But Steven is going to do what he can before he has to turn out the lights.

“Luke Skywalker NEVER said such HURTFUL things to C-3PO.”

While this book is aimed for kids, I love that I got this Star Wars reference and it made me giggle to myself. The relationship between a boy and his droid is very important!

“This is SO much funnier than freezing the teachers’ toilets.”

FARTS = Hilarity. End of discussion.

“How many ‘upstanding students’ own a freeze ray, Steven?”

Steven wants to be a villain, but it can be hard when the principal of your school catches you almost daily. He hasn’t quite figured it all out yet, but he has time.

“LOCAL MAN DRAWS CATS: Slow News Day Continues.”

This was the best quote. I loved the simplicity of it, but also the triumph for the cartoonist. Woohoo
