I really liked the plot. And I liked the dark fantasy vibes of the setting.
I have two main issues:
•I didn't find our MC likable. Tessa grated my nerves- she's kind of a simpleton, to me, but borderline entitled which doesn't really fit the bill for someone who’s been traumatized. I have a difficult time enjoying books with unlikable MCs. That's not to say everyone will dislike Tessa, though. It's probably more to do with personal preference than anything.
•Using dialogue to world-build (including revealing world history) is great but a lot of times it felt like info-dumping- stilted, and unnatural.
I can see how some loved the book and others completely disliked it. It one of those that you'll have to find out for yourself.
