Promise of Blood
by Brian McClellan
2.7 stars. It is good, especially for a debut. My problem is that IMHO the whole universe, magic, and many of the plot twists seem to be quite closely inspired by Sanderson's Mistborn, only lacking the complexity and logical consistency of the original. Many aspects of the universe do not make much sense, unless the eventual reveal is that the whole story happens at some symbolical level (which I do not see happening because of some of the attempts to explain magic within the book). The character work is also not all that great, at least I couldn't immerse much into their POV.
