oh my. goodness. 6⭐️
i have never been so wrecked by a book before. yes, sure, maybe ive cried more when reading other books (though the nightingale DID make me cry), but this book has just changed my life.
never have i read a historical fiction that felt more real, more powerful, more engaging than this book. i’ve always found ww2 history fascinating, but after reading this, i feel as if i was actually THERE. the characters felt like they really existed, and i knew them personally, and laughed and cried and struggled and mourned with them. i mean the author did her RESEARCH. the timeline and the events were so accurately portrayed, it’s incredible.
i full on sobbed for one of the scenes, and cried a couple other times. the emotions this book made me feel- i genuinely thought i didn’t like historical fiction before reading this but i gUESS I WAS WRONG. or maybe it’s just this book idk.
i will say, MAJOR trigger warnings for graphic violence and sexual abuse. i wasn’t really surprised the things that happened in this book happened, but they did happen, and i can’t ignore that.
so yeah um. i’ll never be the same after today! wonderful. UGH I DONT WANT TO MOVE ON.
also isabelle and gaëtan have my heart
