The characters and development in this book are excellent. The plot falls a bit flat for me. It is definitely a device to further the character development, but I think the “balance” was a bit off. The plot seemed to me to be somewhat irrelevant, or misleading. Perhaps this was intentional, but it didn’t land for. I think I would’ve enjoyed this book more if I had more knowledge of the era in history, OR if I could attend one of Leigh’s fabulous book talks she does where she breaks down some of her research for the book and the real-life inspirations (she did this for Ninth House and it was awesome).
Graphic: Religious bigotry, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Violence, Murder, Classism
Minor: Infertility
