All Men of Genius by Lev AC Rosen

5.0

This book was amazing. In addition to being well-done steampunk, this is probably the most realistic portrayal of the Polly Oliver trope* I've ever seen. Violet has a hard time remembering to answer to her brother's name, and she doesn't do a very good job of keeping her story straight. She almost says "my brother" most of the time even though she supposedly only has a sister (and her brother is supposedly her "cousin" Ashton). Despite all of her slip-ups, hardly anyone actually sees through her disguise until she reveals herself.

Then of course I have to mention that this book has flying ferrets, rabbits that swear like sailors, aether ships, and automaton armies. And romance in all shapes and sizes. And a secret underground train. Basically, what I'm saying is that you should read this book if you like any or all of the above.

* A Polly Oliver is when a girl poses as a man, usually to prove herself in a context in which women are not usually allowed. For more information, see the TV Tropes page.
