Reread—Nov. 2018
I feel somewhat guilty, feeling like I had abandoned friends I’d made since reading this three years ago, and I still found myself swept up by this story. I think I’ve decided that the first 100 pages are my favorite, where everything between these 4 characters feels reliant on each other and strong, just like their friendship. There are small scenes I forgot, but also love, like Malcolm writing a check for Willem & Willem and Malcolm unconsciously walking beside Jude at his pace in case he were to fall over. I noticed that as the point of views shift between Jude, JB, Willem, and Malcolm, they each reveal their own insecurities in their friendship, although I suppose their earnestness toward each other through their occasional unsaid actions outshines that. Or maybe its JB’s stubbornness? Malcolm’s need to please? Willem as the frequent mediator? Or Jude’s comfort in being an observer? I suppose I’ll have to just keep rereading this throughout the years to find out.

I can't remember the last time I've read something so incredibly endearing and honest and truthful. Finishing this book is like losing a friend in itself. I'm going to be thinking about this book for a very long time. This book is a treat, but even more so a beautiful, thoughtful, unexpected gift I didn't realize I needed.
