My personal favorite volume (thus far) of this series, and it's becoming clear exactly why it's so renowned and beloved. One of the best things about this story is that you can finish one volume, go read five other books, and then come back to the next volume and pick up right where you left off without issue. It's not entirely clear whether this is a result of the writing itself (storylines do tend to tie up nicely at the end of each volume) or because the characters are just so memorable.

For example, I currently have a huge shelf of books to read, but I feel most compelled to read the next volume of Preacher before I forget what happened in the first volume. No such fear with Sandman - I feel like I could put this series down for a year and then pick up book six and be fine.
