Red Riding Hood by Sarah Blakley-Cartwright, David Leslie Johnson
4.0

An eerie and gripping gothic twist on a classic fairy tale. Red Riding Hood takes us into a dark world of the little village of Daggerhorn. A quaint and quiet city that has been plagued by fear for as long as anyone can remember. A creature who has terrified everyone continues to haunt their daily lives.

Violet has never been the normal girl in her village. She doesn't see the world the way she is told she should. As Violet and her sister Lucie help with the local harvest, a ghost from her past comes back and turns her world upside down. But Peter is not the same boy who was run out of the village ten years ago. He is now a man and a mysterious one at that. When Violet starts to believe that her childhood friend had forgotten all about her, she soon realizes that is not the case. Peter never forgot Violet.

With a rushing feeling that she has finally found her love that her mother has been pestering her about Violet is shocked when the news that she has been promised to another. Violets world comes crashing down around her.

After twenty years of silence from The Wolf, the attacks on the people of Daggerhorn send the villagers into a panicked frenzy. They thought that the attacks had stopped when they started offering up their animals as a sacrifice. They thought that they had finally found some peace.

Word was sent to Father Solomon, a werewolf hunter, of the situation in Daggerhorn and he comes to help this village but not long after his arrival does Father Auguste realize his mistake.

When The Wolf targets Violet, making it clear that it wants her and only her, the town turns it's back on the girl they have known for their entire lives. Violet is forced to face The Wolf and the town by herself.

I love the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood. There have been so many amazing versions of this amazing fable. Red Riding Hood is another one to add to the list. A great dark twist to an already wonderful tale. Blakely-Cartwright creates an amazing world of love, terror, mystery and the longing to be free.

I absolutely loved this version and highly recommend it to anyone who loves the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood.
