Reading this took me on an adventure that I haven’t been in a long time.
This YA fantasy claims to be inspired by Beauty and the Beast, but I wouldn’t really describe it as such.
Elizabeth Lim had really honed her craft when it comes to writing a whimsical tale inspired by Chinese Mythology with talking sea creatures, mermaids, dragons, demons and a blue haired painter.
The character building was wonderful to follow, but the stand out here was the world building. I was enthralled with all the details and the importance placed on details like noodles or water bells.
The romance was classically beautiful with all the regret and longing one can hope for in a YA fantasy.
Highly recommend for fans of The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea.
