Mischling by Affinity Konar
3.0

I wanted to love it, but I only liked it. First, I'm a little confused by the title. The book wasn't really about Mischlinge; it was about twins. So the title is a little confusing. However, I did love the idea of the book, as I've always wanted to learn more about twins' experiences with Mengele. There are many stories about WWII out there that have not been told, and I thought this was one that needed more coverage. And for that I did like it, for the sisters' connection. But I didn't like the alternating first person. I couldn't tell the twins apart, and so whenever the chapter switched, I had to reorient myself, which led to a frustrating reading experience. I also thought details were fuzzy. Like I still don't understand how Pearl was separated from Stasha. I often had to go back and reread sections, and it still wasn't always clear. I did find a lot of truth and beauty in the writing and perspective, but I wanted it all to be clearer for the reader, because I thought it would have been more impactful.
