A year after the Avon broadcast and two years since the Icarus crashed on a strangely terraformed planet comes the launch of Daedalus - a memorial for the Icarus. However, the events are putting yet another planet, Corinth, in danger while also risking the entire human population across all the successfully terraformed planets. No big deal.
We have a new duo yet again, the first of which we were briefly introduced to in This Shattered World - Sofia Quinn. She seemed like a sweet and innocent girl in TSW that it came as a bit of a surprise when she talks about how she reads people so she can manipulate them into doing what she wants or giving her what she needs. She wants revenge for her fathers death and she will pay any price to make sure LaRoux Industries gets what they deserve.
Our new male lead is Gideon Marchant - an eighteen-year-old computer hacker, known as the Knave of Hearts. He too has a connection to one of our previous main characters, but you will have to read to find out who! Gideon knows how to get past all sorts of security measures and can perform hacks like no other. He also lives near a cool Chinese food place, so he definitely has it all going for him, except that he is hell bent on tracking down the woman he believed covered up LaRoux's involvement with all that went wrong on Avon.
These characters were nice to read about but not my favourite (Lilac and Tarver hold that award). Sofia and Gideon's 'relationship' was a mess of trust issues and half truths woven in with hidden agendas and a somewhat common goal. Of course the goal is no different to our previous two duos - take LaRoux Industries down! In fact, it is this common goal that actually bring all six LaRoux-hating individuals together for the big finale to the trilogy. Lilac, Tarver, Jubilee and Flynn have been working together since Avon and with Gideon and Sofia on side, they have a team, they form a plan and they have to hope that they can pull it off among all the chaos.
As with the other two books, the two points of view were separated by a page not in the same timeline as the rest of the book. I listened to part of this book as an audio and I must warn you - these parts were narrated by the whispers and the voice of the whispers may give you nightmares. It was creepy and I may have squealed when I first heard it. Ignoring the minor heart failure I experienced the first time I heard the whispers, these were some of my favourite parts of the book because it told their story which you would not have gotten from any of the human characters.
As for the plot, it was really good. There were a few times I wished it would move along quicker but there were details in those 'slow' moments that were necessary to the plot. I think the story and the conclusion to the events from all three books was a brilliant way to wrap up the trilogy. A scary amount of lives lost on multiple planets thanks to selfishness, an attempted dictatorship and a species that was having none of that but the high anxiety series was filled with a positive message - there is always hope.
I would say this one is a 4.5 but I am rounding up due to my love of the series. I have to say that while the series messed with my emotions and mental health, it was a brilliantly executed trilogy and is a new favourite series that I would recommend to lovers of science fiction and young adult.
