The Trial by Franz Kafka

3.0

Kafka is one of my favorite writers, but not for his 'great work.'

I love the short 'stories' of Kafka, I love the journals and aphorisms of Kafka. There is nothing better than the dabbling, incomplete, mad-cap writing he has done. And that leaves me dissatisfied with his full-length books.

So I found myself best liking the story-within-the-story, the strange tale of the Law's door-keeper. And a few snatches of conversation like this:

“'But I am not guilty,' said K.; 'it’s a mistake. And, if it comes to that, how can any man be called guilty? We are all simply men here, one as much as the other.' 'That is true,' said the priest, 'but that’s how all guilty men talk.'”
