I can absolutely see why this was so revolutionary for so many high schoolers…. but reading this for the first time as a grown adult? Meh. A good war novel, an excellent curation of tone and running theme, but all the “Groundbreaking, World-Changing” parts are pretty tame if you’ve already read works in the vein of a Chomsky or a Kropotkin.
Also, I just can’t get over how he talks about women. Every woman in this book is either a sex symbol, a political statement, or a piece of set dressing. None of them are even true characters, let alone fully fleshed-out people.
