The Dark by Lemony Snicket

1.0

So....I hated this. It started out really strong, I enjoyed the personification of the dark. Snicket seems to have a good understanding of how a child thinks, the writing is in simple, small chunks. And then out of nowhere, this wall of text that doesn't seem like it's supposed to be in the book. The whole book is written in the third person, but sort of from the child's point of view. The narrator is almost pulling the text straight from the child's thoughts. And then this wall of text that seems to be desperately trying to explicate the meaning of the book. The language is more complex, not the same reading level as the rest of the book. The Dark would have been a really cute book had Snicket not shoved the underlying meaning down the reader's throat. Definitely a few pages that just didn't need to be in there, but that black page with a wall of text really threw me off and ruined the vibe of the book for me.
