Lady's Knight
by Meagan Spooner, Amie Kaufman
I really wanted to love this book. I will say that I did like it, but I didn't love it. I liked that it sort of felt like a queer, female-driven version of A Knight's Tale. I like the romance between our two main characters, developing from two different backgrounds. I like that our protagonist is a bad ass dragon fighting queer woman who, with the help of the women around her--and a few male allies too!--manages to defeat a dragon and win jousts. But the part that reminded me the strongest of A Knight's Tale was our completely modern use of language and references in what I think was supposed to medieval England. I wish the author had made the setting fictional--some fictional place inspired by Medieval history I think would have made these modern/contemporary references fun--instead, set in history they pulled me out of the story a bit.
Altogether I think that this book was cool in concept, but maybe not quite full realized in execution.
